Accra, Ghana – February 26, 2026
Ghana is set to hit a major digital milestone with an ambitious new Ghana 5G 2027 target: 70% population coverage by March 6, 2027 – the country’s 70th Independence Day.
Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Samuel Nartey George made the announcement yesterday during the National Communications Authority (NCA) 30th anniversary event in Accra.
“Our vision is to achieve 70% of 5G population density coverage by the 70th independence celebration,” Minister George stated. He gave the NCA a clear one-year deadline to deliver through both wholesale and network-led 5G rollout models.

The government is removing exclusivity barriers and will soon issue formal directives to the NCA ahead of a fresh 5G spectrum auction. This open-market approach is designed to accelerate infrastructure and bring in new local and international investment.
What This Means for Ghanaians
Expect faster mobile money transactions, telemedicine in remote communities, improved e-learning, smart farming tools, and lower data costs. The Ghana 5G rollout will directly boost everyday digital life across the country.
Why US Readers & Investors Should Care
For the Ghanaian diaspora in the US and American tech/telecom companies, this is a clear signal of a maturing market. US firms can participate in spectrum bids, infrastructure partnerships, and 5G-enabled services. With stronger connectivity, ties in trade, remittances, tourism, and even 2026 FIFA World Cup-related opportunities become much easier.

Ghana is moving fast to become one of West Africa’s leading digital economies – and the clock is ticking toward its 70th birthday.
